Research Interests
I am interested in the development of new biodegradable and/or biorenewable polymers as alternatives to petroleum-derived commodity polymers. Potential renewable feedstocks for new materials include plant oils, algal oils, chitin (from crustacean shells), and alginates (from seaweed). I am working to make new biodegradable poly(a-keto esters) via radical ring-opening polymerization. I am also interested in the (bio)degradation of polymers in marine environments, specifically comparing the rates and mechanisms of (bio)degradation of polylactide and pro-oxidant enriched polyethylene in marine environments to published studies on degradation in terrestrial landfills.
